If you live in the state of California, chances are you have to file your state taxes forms every year. Very few people don’t have to file – those who have no income or are too young are among them. If you have to file California income taxes, here are a few things to know about the state income tax forms for California.
Where To Get Them?
If you filed taxes last year, chances are you will get your new state tax forms in the mail. If you are filing through the mail, these are the easiest to use. Just complete them and mail them in, using the mailing label that the state sent you. It is the best way to have them processed quickly.
If you didn’t get the state tax forms in the mail, you can get the forms for California – and any other state – on their website. It is easy to find using any search engine, such as Google, Yahoo, etc. At the site, there is a link at “Forms” that will give you everything you need.
There are also other sites that have the state income tax forms – they are usually self-help sites around the Internet.
How To Use The Online Forms
When you go to the online site to get the state tax forms, you can either open the form, fill it out and print it, or save the form onto your computer or flash drive for completing later (either completing on the computer to print out or to print out blank forms to complete on paper). Either works fine, though most people need to gather the pertinent information before they can fill out the form, so saving the form for fill-in use later is preferable.
Important to note: For some versions of the online forms, which are created in Adobe Acrobat, it will let you fill them in online, but you won’t be able to save the information on the form. You must print the form once it is filled in, and the next time you open the form, it will be blank again. If you want to retain a copy of your tax form electronically, be sure you use a form that is savable once filled in.
What Else Do I Need?
For the basic form – the CA 540 – you will need to have already completed this year’s tax form for the IRS. Some of the information from the federal form will be transferred directly to the CA 540, or to the CA (540) form, which is the form on which the adjustments are made between the federal form and the state tax form. The state tax form refers to the specific line

Remember the Boston Tea Party? In 1773, the king in England and his Parliment had just initiated the Tea Tax – and the settlers didn’t accept it. Many of them dressed up as Indians, boarded a trade ship from England with tea on it, and pushed a whole lot of the tea (it was the cargo) overboard. It was their way of rebelling against the new tax. Because the king believed it was Indians, nothing was done to those settlers, but it didn’t stop the tax. This tax came about the same time period as the Stamp Act and the Sugar Act (which both lowered taxes), but this was just too much.
Taxes have never been popular, as the Tea Tax showed, but taxes are a “necessary evil” in our modern society. The payment of income taxes funds the government in many ways. Let’s take a look at some of them.
Not Just A Little Red Schoolhouse
The first type of public education in America was a one-room schoolhouse, where all the grades were educated together – when it wasn’t harvest time. The room was fueled with a wood stove, and the students used Our public education is funded by our income tax money. Though some people choose to homeschool or send their children to a private school, the vast majority of Americans attend public school for at least a portion of their education. Though many people don’t like our public education program – especially in comparison to other countries – at least it does get many students educated fairly well.
I Don’t Know What You’ve Been Told…
…But the military is also funded by the government, specifically from our income taxes money. Whether you are for or against the war, most people would agree that it is important for American to maintain a strong military. And what funds the military? The money we pay as income taxes.
Respecting Your Elders
In our country, we pay money in to the Social Security program our whole working life. They just automatically take it as a deduction from our paychecks – whether we want them to or not. That money is set aside to give back to us when we’re old and gray and can’t work anymore. At least, in theory it is. In reality, the money is given to other people, older and grayer than we are, who are already receiving Social Security payments. The idea is that our children, when they work, will be funding our Social Security. It should work out just fine. But in reality, often the money input into the system isn’t enough to cover the number of people now receiving Social Security payments – and so our government is paying a lot of that. You got it – it comes from our income taxes.
